No matter which direction you approach Kallenhardt from, the imposing and formidable tower of St. Clemens Church always comes into view first, emphasizing the central role of the parish church within Kallenhardt. Positioned on the highest point of the hill, in the center of the town enclosed by the city walls, it looms over all other buildings, marking its sacred presence.

Around the year 1300, within the city walls and at the very spot where the oldest part of the church, the formidable tower, still crowns the hill, a church dedicated to Pope Clement was built.

The noticeable contrast between the tower and the nave can be attributed to the fact that the nave dates back to 1722. The approximately 42-meter-high tower, built in the style of the Romanesque era when church construction took precedence, stands as a monumental stone structure.

The blocky building is simple in design, characterized by its thick walls, with the massive character enhanced by the round arches. Constructed from hefty stones, it served as a refuge for the citizens of Kallenhardt during the Middle Ages.

In the night from June 6th to 7th, 1791, when almost the entire town of Kallenhardt was engulfed in flames, the tower spire, the bells, and the church roof were also destroyed.

To protect against the destructive forces of nature, the first lightning rod was installed in 1821.

After various bells that called people to worship and told the time over the centuries, the first steel bells were delivered in 1874.

The exterior appearance of the church hardly hints at the richness of Baroque art within. Only the main portal, inviting visitors to the church with its redesigned church square and staircase, offers a glimpse. When visitors step inside the church, they are surprised by the abundance of Baroque artworks, which the community could likely only afford in the 18th century with the financial support of the prosperous Grafschaft Monastery.

The most valuable treasure of the church is located in the tower, a Madonna dating back to the early 12th century. It could have been an ornament of the old church in Ostervelde. Its posture bears a striking resemblance to the early Romanesque Imad Madonna from the cathedral treasury in Paderborn.
